Why Go Local

When we’re caught up in the busyness of our everyday lives, it can be hard to make time to check out local shops for the products we buy most. Sure, big box stores have everything we need in one place, and we know what to expect and where to look, but is it really easier?
If you shop local, you are more likely to talk about products with the owner, or at least an employee who feels empowered, and is knowledgeable about the product. Big chains are trying to cut back on people, eliminating human interaction in many cases.
You can trust that local produce will be fresh, and won’t have travelled thousands of miles to reach your plate. You are supporting the dreams of a neighbour, not just stuffing the pockets of a rich investor.
Local shops give your community a unique and funky style. They draw in people from surrounding areas, and money spent in the community stays in the community, benefiting everyone.
You will be better able to know where your products come from, and how they were made. Small businesses strive to have something new, exciting and appealing to customers, and you can create the market for products you want to find.
Use your wallet to vote on points such as fair trade, organic, local, and fresh! You can be assured that the things you buy were made by your community members, and not by workers in third world countries.
It is easier to hold your neighbours accountable than it is to monitor a massive corporation. It will increase community trust and interaction. Basically, there’s no reason not to look for local shops!
Some great local businesses in our area include:
Sammich Cafe, a small shop run by a lovely young lady who makes everything herself.
Ingredients Cafe and Community Market, an organic marketplace and eatery, with vegetarian and vegan meals, organic groceries and workshops. Also, surprisingly affordable!
Paradise Boutique, with handmade swimwear for every body, and unique clothes from designers near and far.
Hide+Seek Cafe, a lovely Oak Bay coffee shop run by an absolutely stunning couple. They really know their beans! Kid friendly.
The Victoria Public Market, a little bit of everything
Jam, one of the hottest brunch place in town.
Urban Ground, affordable organic market in Thetis Heights. Will match prices!
Level Ground Trading, fair trade, so products don’t come from here, but it is a local initiative with the highest standards of quality and treatment of workers.
Migration, clothing, jewelry, pillows, all by local artists!
